Milwaukee City Hall, Common Council Chambers
Restoration by Conrad Schmitt Studios

Built: 1894 - 1896

Milwaukee's Common Council chamber is the largest city council meeting room in the United States, even after the wrought-iron balcony galleries were removed as part of a renovation in 1931.

Conrad Schmitt Studios’ restoration of the Common Council Chambers began with archival research into the history of the building. Vintage photographs and written descriptions offered information about the original interior decoration, guiding the design process. A thorough assessment of existing conditions revealed that the visible scheme was significantly different from the original design. Colors had been muted by years of accumulated dirt and grime, the magnificent woodwork was obscured by discolored varnish, and various repairs and additions had altered the appearance of the space. After developing a detailed plan of action, CSS artisans set to work.

Columns and pilasters were marbleized to match historic photographs. Capitals and moldings were gilded. Yellowed varnish was removed to reveal the rich woodwork. Stucco plaster walls were painted and glazed and stenciled borders and bands were applied to the gallery ceiling and beams. The restored interior is lighter and brighter, reflecting the original design intent for the Chambers and restoring the historic character of the space.
